William Adams died today the 16th May, 1620, at Hirado in Nagasaki Prefecture, Edo shogunate. His resting place is William Adams Memorial Park, Sakigata Hill, Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.
Today, i took some pictures of the William Adams memorial in his birthplace of Gillingham. I also laid some flowers with a small tribute to Adams and the continued friendship between Britain and Japan. The ‘Will Adams Festival’ run by Medway council is no more, but the annual student exchange run by the Medway Japan Group endures. There are many ideas for a new annual celebration, and possibly a new permanent memorial for William Adams in Gillingham/The Medway Towns. Next year, Friday 16 May 2025, i will hopefully be in Gillingham to mark Miura Anjin’s anniversary, and you are welcome to join me.
